Frequently Asked Questions
If I use a rayon thread for decorative stitching, what should I use in the bobbin?
Rayon thread such as from Sulky or Madeira give beautiful results with embroidery. Another good choice is Isacord polyester embroidery thread. It is used by professional embroiderers and gives the appearance of rayon with the strength of polyester. Most BERNINA® stores carry it, but if yours does not, it can be ordered on line (www.embroideryonline.com).
With any of these threads, it is best to use a lightweight bobbin thread such as Mettler's 60/2 cotton, Madeira's 70/2 /bobbinfil polyester, and 100% Spun Polyester Bobbin Thread from OESD. The lightweight thread reduces bulk on the underside of the satin stitch. Because the weight of the upper thread and the lower thread is different, the tension may need to be adjusted to achieve a perfect stitch. With the combinations discussed above, you will usually need to lessen the upper tension (go to a lower number) so that the top thread pulls slightly to the wrong side of the fabric.
Your BERNINA® has a bobbin case with a bobbin case finger or an Embroidery Bobbin Case with a pigtail. Threading the bobbin thread through the bobbin case finger or the pigtail will often compensate for the differences in thread weights.
Experiment with the settings until you get the desired look for your stitch.
